Cricket is one of the oldest and most popular games in the world. It is unique in the way it emphasises individual responsibility and performance but all for the sake of the team of 11 players.

A cricket pitch consists of two ‘wickets’ about 10 metres apart with lines called ‘creases’ drawn about a metre in front of each wicket. This is all in a large field encircled by a ‘boundary’.

One team sends out two batsmen at a time who each stand in front of a wicket and attempt to score ‘runs’. Meanwhile the other team (the fielders) ‘fields’ with one team member bowling the ball at the batsmen and trying to get them ‘out’. ‘Runs’ are scored by both batsmen running in between the wicket (1 run), hitting the ball to the boundary after at least one bounce (4 runs) or straight over the boundary (6 runs).

Batsmen are ‘out’ if the bowler hits his wicket with the ball, if the ball hits his legs in front of the wicket (LBW or Leg Before Wicket), if a fielder catches the ball after the batsmen hits it or if a fielders hit his wicket with the ball while he is out of his crease. Both teams play like this until all of the batting team are out and then they swap over. Both teams get to bat twice in a ‘Test’ match and the winning team is the one with the most runs once everyone has batted.
